Many people are familiar with turmeric as a traditional Middle-Eastern spice, but few know of its medicinal virtues.

Turmeric, otherwise known as Circuma longa, is a member of the ginger family.

Its main characteristics are a pepper-like aroma, sharp taste and golden color. People across the globe use this herb for cooking.

Turmeric contains a wide range of antioxidant, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, anticarcinogenic, antimutagenic and anti-inflammatory properties.It is also loaded with many healthy nutrients such as protein, dietary fiber, niacin, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Vitamin K, potassium, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium and zinc.

All the nutrients contained in Turmeric..it is not surprising that this root can treat a wide variety of health problems!

1. Weight Management

Turmeric powder can be very helpful in maintaining an ideal body weight. A component present in turmeric helps increase the flow of bile, an important component in the breakdown of dietary fat. Those who wish to lose weight or treat obesity and other associated diseases can benefit from having one teaspoon of turmeric powder with every meal.

Turmeric is highly valuable for the influence it exerts on the digestive system and the liver. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is considered a digestive bitter and a carminative. It can be incorporated into foods, including rice & bean dishes, to improve digestion, reduce gas & bloating. It is a cholagogue, stimulating bile production in the liver and encouraging excretion of bile from the gallbladder. This improves the body's ability to digest fats more efficiently. I usually add grated tumeric root in my infused water and smoothies.

There have been many studies done by some of the top researchers. They have been able to find out that Tumeric (Curcumin) is a beneficial herb in cancer treatment!

It can affect cancer growth, development and spread at the molecular level. There have been studies showing that it can reduce angiogenesis (growth of new blood vessels in tumors), metastasis (spread of cancer), as well as contributing to the death of cancerous cells. Multiple studies have shown that curcumin can reduce the growth of cancerous cells in the laboratory and inhibit the growth of tumours in test animals.

4. Heal Wounds with Tumeric

The antibiotic action prevents bacterial infection of the wounds by bacteria such as E.coli, staphylococcus and bacillus, Anti-inflammatory action relieves inflammation, The analgesic action relives pain, Helps in formation of new skin cells and closes the wound.

Tumeric has so many more benefits that you should probably drive to your local grocery shop and purchase some. I usually get the raw tumeric root but you can also use the powder with about anything you eat. I've been using Tumeric off and on for about 6 months now. Most recently started infusing my gallon of water with grated tumeric, lemon, cucumber, and oranges. It has done wonders to my body.
